Chennai: Tamil cinema is mourning the sudden loss of actor-director Manoj Bharathiraja, son of legendary filmmaker Bharathiraja, who passed away on Tuesday due to a cardiac arrest. He was 48 years old.
The news was confirmed by Nadigar Sangam (South Indian Artistes’ Association) through a statement on their official X (formerly Twitter) handle:
“Director Bharathiraja’s son Manoj K Bharathiraja passed away due to cardiac arrest.”

A Life Dedicated to Cinema
Born into a family deeply rooted in Tamil cinema, Manoj made his acting debut in Taj Mahal (1999), a romantic drama directed by his father. He later went on to star in films like Eera Nilam and Varushamellam Vasantham, carving a space for himself in the industry.
Over the years, Manoj transitioned to supporting roles, consistently showcasing his versatility on screen. His directorial debut came in 2023 with Margazhi Thingal, a romantic drama that featured his father, Bharathiraja.
Manoj was last seen in the Prime Video series Snakes & Ladders.
A Wave of Condolences from the Film Industry and Political Leaders
The Tamil film fraternity and political figures expressed deep grief over Manoj’s untimely demise.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin shared his condolences, expressing shock and sorrow over the tragic news.
Music Maestro Ilaiyaraaja, actor-politician Khushbu Sundar, and director Venkat Prabhu also paid tribute to the late actor.
Khushbu Sundar took to social media to share an emotional message:
“Extremely shocked to hear that Manoj is not among us anymore. His untimely demise pains. He was just 48 years. May God give the strength to his father Thiru #Bharathiraaja and his family to overcome this unbearable, painful loss. You will be missed, Manoj. Rest in peace. Om Shanthi.”
Political leaders including AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami, Tamil Maanila Congress President G.K. Vasan, and Tamil Nadu BJP President K. Annamalai also offered their condolences.
A Family Left in Grief
Manoj Bharathiraja is survived by his wife, actor Nandana, and their two daughters, Arshitha and Mathivadhani. His passing leaves a void not just in his family but in Tamil cinema as well.
His contributions, both as an actor and a filmmaker, will be remembered by fans and the industry for years to come.
